Nearly 3 and a half million homes were built in the second half of the last decade. That’s a lot of brick and mortar and even more planning.

But do you know what too many architects, builders, and future homeowners forget when they’re building their dream home? Door hinges.

Yep, you read that right. Door hinges. These tiny, unnoticed little gadgets can make all the difference when it comes to making a house a home. In terms of both style and function, door hinges are something you ignore at your peril.

So let’s take a look at our 3 favorite kinds of hinge and how they add style to your home, shall we?

#1 The Butt Hinge

Stop laughing in the back. The butt hinge is actually a super common type of hinge. You very likely have a few in your home right now. Curious to know what they look like? Check out Bommer to find out.

How do they work? Well, the two leaves of the hinge are constructed in such a way that they butt up against one another in the door frame, hence the name.

They can be pretty low-profile, which makes them a great choice for doors where you don’t want to draw too much attention to the hinges themselves. Single action door hinges are a great opportunity for a butt hinge.

Also, there are actually a few different kinds of butt hinge. Some work using bearings, others use a spring, and there’s even a type called a ‘rising butt hinge’, because whoever invented it either had a great sense of humor or none whatsoever.

#2 The Overlay Hinge

An overlay hinge is a great option for when you want a door to sit completely flush against the doorway. They often get used in wardrobes or a cabinet door hinges, since they let furniture achieve an aesthetically pleasing flat appearance.

They’re pretty complex little gadgets, though. Thank goodness someone else came up with them so we don’t have to.

#3 The Strap Hinge

The hinge of garden gate fame! Strap hinges are most commonly found adorning doors that live outside. They’re very uncommon indoors, but ultra reliable, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be a trendsetter and install them on all your interior doors if you want.

Strap hinges offer a lot of support to the doors they’re attached to, which is very kind of them and also makes them a great choice for doors that are going to see a lot of through-traffic.

Those are just a few of the many incredible door hinges that lurk in doorways across the world. Whether you’re looking for form, function, or both, there’s a door hinge out there for you.
