Meanwhile, up-tempo pop songs such as “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd drained the battery faster. The test was overseen by Duncan Williams, a lecturer at the University of Salford’s School of Science, Engineering and Environment. Williams is a co-founder of WaveTrace, a psychoacoustic consultancy that tracks human response to sound and music stimuli.
His team evaluated drivers — none of whom had ever driven an EV previously — as they completed an 18-mile route in a Kia EV6 while listening to a playlist of six songs from different genres.
“What we found from only two days of testing was that music really can have a dramatic influence on the real-world driving range of an electric vehicle,” Williams said in a statement from Kia UK. “Different songs resulted in varying electrodermal activity and blood volume increase for each of the participants. This had a knock-on effect on driving style, and ultimately influenced the real-world driving range of the EV6.”
