For Mercedes AMG EV power, ‘axial flux’ anyone?

Mercedes will build axial flux motors at a repurposed combustion engine factory in Berlin.

The motors will power Mercedes-Benz’s AMG electric-only platform and potentially other future models.

Schäfer revealed that the axial motor would be paired with a new battery technology that will offer super-fast charging.

He declined to elaborate on the battery tech.

“The whole game is to get the energy to the motor as quickly as possible,” Schäfer said. “It’s going to be something different.”

Mercedes is not alone in its interest in this new tech.

Yasa’s axial flux motors have been tapped for other plug-in hybrid supercars, including the Koenigsegg Regera and Ferrari’s first plug-in hybrid, the SF90 Stradale.

Meanwhile, Renault has partnered with Whylot to use axial flux motors in its hybrids starting in 2025.

EV motor technology is in its relative infancy, Woolmer told Automotive News Europe.

“The electric motor is no longer seen as a commodity,” he said. “There’s a huge R&D race to make the motor smaller and lighter, more efficient and low cost.”
